Socks Regular

VIS330 Typography III “Serious Type Design” Assignment, 2009

A type design inspired by the characteristic shape of socks—where one edge is straight and the other is curved. This san-serif typeface was designed to be highly legible, and is suitable for use as body text. With the curved and straight edge that I have incorporated into its design, I hope that I have given a regular san-serif typeface design a quirky twist.

Fun Socks

VIS330 Typography III “Fun Type Design” Assignment, 2009

A fun type design created using long black socks. The reason why I chose a sock is that it is an everyday object that we use but it is constantly forgotten and taken for granted. I also like the flexibility of the object in which it can be easily manipulated to form text. It served as an inspiration for the later Socks typeface. Only the lower case was designed.

Six Merlions Jokingly Zap Quick Beams of Coloured Lightwaves

VIS330 Typography III “Environmental Typography” Assignment, 2009

A Singapore-theme pangram combined with the use of changing colours in the projection, the installation muses on the trend of adding colour-changing LED lights onto every iconic landmark and building in Singapore. Acrylic was specially selected and treated to interact with the light being projected onto it from an angle. This combination of light, material and perspective brings about an appreciation of typographic forms on a different dimension.

A collaborative typographic installation with Bernadette Chong, Ow Wan Lin and May Lim. Exhibited at Singapore Design Festival 2009, as part of ‘Beyond Typography’ exhibition.

Mrs Eaves

VIS330 Typography III “Type Personality” Assignment, 2009

Mrs Eaves is elegance. Mrs Eaves is the classic beauty of an era gone by. Mrs Eaves is romantic, refined and sensitive. Mrs Eaves is, above all, feminine.

Mrs Eaves celebrates the women throughout the ages who had been unsung heroes by giving their unfailing support to the men. Just as Eve was created out of Adam, Mrs Eaves was created out of Baskerville the typeface. And how rightfully was the typeface named. For it was Mrs Eaves, John Baskerville’s companion and help, who faithfully completed his unfinished works even after his death.

I have used Ava Gardner (1922–1990), an acclaimed Hollywood leading lady, to personify Mrs Eaves. She was renowned for her beauty and elegance that had come to define the 1940s. Text used for the portrait was from an article written by Zuzano Licko about Mrs Eaves in her 1998 Émigré catalogue.

Bei Hong – Master of East and West

VIS250 Typography II “Bilingual Book” Assignment, 2009

A school project to design a bilingual book. To dialogue with the nature of the book, I chose to design a book on Xu Bei Hong, an outstanding Chinese artist who painted in the Nanyang region for a short period of time during pre-Independence Singapore. He was an artist who was prolific in both the Chinese and Western tradition of painting. The book was designed into two distinct parts that documents his two distinctive style.
